AKB48's "Beginner" Currently Holds the Record in Japan for Highest First Week Sales for a Female Group, Third Highest First Week Sales for a Female Artist and AKB48 is First Female Artist to Sell Over Half a Million Copies Each for Three Consecutive Singles

AKB48 moves ahead of Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru by being the first to sell over half a million copies each of three consecutive singles (the former record was shared by the the three artists at two consecutive singles each). By selling over 827,000 copies its first week, Beginner now holds the record for the highest first week sales for a single for a female group, and the third highest first week sales for a single for a female artist, just 1,000 copies below second placer Amuro Namie's "Can You Celebrate?" (released February, 1997) and first placer Utada Hikaru's "Addicted to You", released November, 1999, which sold over 1,068,000 on its first week.

Beginner's total sales after the third day of its release, October 29, 2010, is 742,109 copies, surpassing Arashi's "Troublemaker" released March 3, 2010, which has sold almost 700,000 copies this year. Selling over 700,000 copies only on the third day of its release, fans are hoping for Beginner to hit the 1,000,000 mark before the year ends, or even within the first week of its release. AKB48 still has another single to be released this year, on Dec. 8, 2010, featuring the Senbatsus from the Janken Tournament. If Beginner doesn't hit the one million mark, it's possible that the next one will.

The previous single's first week sales has already been surpassed by Beginner on its first day! This is their fifth #1 single, not counting subunits' singles Akkanbe Bashi and Kokoro no Hane, and album Kamikyoku Tachi. Congrats AKB48! Good times!
